Fourteen of the top boys and girls high schools teams in the state of New Jersey and in the United States will take part in the 8th annual Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children Basketball Festival January 8th and January 9th, 2011.
The four boys games will be played Sunday January 9th at Kean University in Union, NJ. The afternoon is highlighted by a 2:00 p.m. matchup between two of the state’s top teams, St. Patrick’s and St. Benedict’s. Later in the day, Hall of Fame head coach Bob Hurley will lead his St. Anthony’s team against St. Joseph’s Montvale in the final game of the day at 6:00 p.m. The other matchups will feature Seton Hall Prep vs. Hudson Catholic at Noon and St. Peter’s Prep vs. Trenton Catholic at 4:00 p.m.
“The SFIC is thrilled to have these talented teams participate and be part of our Basketball Festival,” explained Bill Fitzpatrick, the Director of the SFIC Basketball Festival. “We are proud to have recently inducted Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley and his St. Anthony’s team, as well as St. Patrick’s and St. Benedict’s in the festival once again. We fully expect the competition and level of excitement to be as high as it’s been in years past.”
The girls teams will kick the weekend off with a tripleheader on Saturday January 8th at Paramus Catholic High School in Paramus, NJ. Holy Angels and St. Anthony’s will tip-off at 1:00 p.m. followed by Paramus Catholic vs. Roselle Catholic at 2:45 p.m. and Immaculate Heart Academy vs. Mount St. Dominic at 4:30 p.m.
“We certainly have to thank the schools, administrators, coaches and players for participating in
the Basketball Festival,” explained Gerry O’Connor, the Executive Director of the SFIC. “It will be a great day of high school basketball for a worthy cause.”
The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children is a non-profit organization that invests in the future of disadvantaged children in the inner-cities by donations from corporations, foundations, and individuals. The SFIC has generated over $40 million in scholarships and this ongoing drive has led to about 90% of its students graduating and pursuing a secondary education.
