The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children (SFIC) 2018 Gala was an evening of elegance and a huge success. Honorees for the evening were Mr. Hugh Weber, President, Prudential Center and NJ Devils and Polly & Terry O’Toole. Mr. Weber was honored with the Vitae Discimus Award – “We Teach by Our Lives” and The O’Toole’s were honored with the Archbishop Gerety Award, named after Archbishop Emeritus Peter L. Gerety, founder of The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children. Our special guest for the evening was His Eminence, Joseph Cardinal William Tobin, Archbishop of The Newark Archdiocese.
Student speaker Jose Garcia, junior from St. Benedicts Prep, thanked the donors that provided his scholarship through SFIC. Jose will be attending Villanova University on a full Presidential Scholarship provided by honorees Polly & Terry O’Toole. He also thanked the O’Brien family which provided his scholarship to attend St. Benedict Prep and his mother who got weepy eyed as he spoke about the opportunities the scholarship afforded him and the sacrifice his parents made for his Catholic education. Fr. Edwin D. Leahy O.S.B., Headmaster of St. Benedict’s Prep and Honorary Gala Chairman, introduced Jose and discussed how SFIC and the gifts from our donors are changing the lives of many students in need.
Guests were greeted by student ambassadors from St. Benedict’s Prep as they entered the gala room. The evening was filled with good food, good music and great company. Guest bid the night away on many wonderful items including an evening at the world famous “Rao’s” and “Dinner with the Cardinal”.
