Julia Alvarez – Grade 2
St. Joseph Grammar School in Jersey City, NJ
Haydee Morales was raising her family in downtown Jersey City. Her dream was to send her daughter to a Catholic school. She never inquired about registration because she knew that she could not afford the tuition. She was among the working poor, and at times unemployed due to continuing health issues.
One day, and she cannot explain why, she decided to move beyond her fear, walked into the local Catholic school, and inquired about registering her youngest child, Julia. She was surprised and delighted to hear that she could be a recipient of scholarship assistance through the partnership of The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children (SFIC) and the Children’s Scholarship Fund (CSF).
Ms. Morales was thankful because she knew with that with help from family, and the SFIC/CSF Jersey City program, that her dream to provide her daughter with a fighting chance through a quality education would come true! Julia began attending Catholic school and completed her first year as a happy and joyful child with a charming personality!
Now three years later, as far as Julia is concerned, there is no question about what school is the best for her! Julia loves Saint Joseph’s School and does not care about the far walk every day, even during the bitter cold winter days. She likes the interaction with her friends and teachers, her favorite subject is Math and would like to have Art more than once a week since she loves to draw and color.
