Jamal Litus, Grade 6
Our Lady Help of Christians in East Orange, NJ
I live in Newark with my mother and father, as well as my brother Malik who is in first grade and my four-year-old sister, Allyha. Recently, my aunt suddenly passed away and my three-year-old cousin, Christina, is now living with us.
I love being at Our Lady Help of Christians because I know I am getting a great education! I want to go to culinary school and open a restaurant with my father. Every Saturday I make breakfast for my brother, sister and cousin.
My favorite subjects in school are Math, Spelling and Science. I recently was awarded First Place for my essay on St. Alexander in the Archdiocesan Black Saint Essay contest. I just entered the Maryknoll Essay contest where I had to write, “What Can I Do to Serve the Poor?”
At Our Lady Help of Christians, our teachers remind us that “giving” is an important part of our faith and our good will to our neighbors near and far. Our school recently donated food to the parish food pantry in addition to $3,000 we collected. We are now raising funds for the disaster in the Philippines.
“Jamal comes from a very fine family, with two young parents who struggle to keep their family here at OLHC, but they still try to aid others when possible”, said Sister Pat Hogan, O.P., OLHC Principal.
